samsung disconnect
I really like the new viral work Samsung are doing but there seems to be a huge disconnect from the viral piece to the bad experience on their site, they even call this infotainment makes you want to puke just hearing the name.
Furry animal number campaign had great idea to be a good UGC on rails concept where users could have written their own video ideas for animals to use the phone for. Instead we get more muzak and infotainment. Samsung wake up.

mono

I worked with mono on a shared client back a few years now. I remember them being a breath of fresh air for that large corporate brand. Then I was enjoying their viral monoface last year and now I see the quality digital, print and ad work they are creating. A future model of what agencies look like based on the Goodby school of thought.

No one sees the big gorilla in the room

Ginger Monkey posts on the WCRS recent copying of someone else's work without credit. Most of the argument is around the fact that the campaign's important message of road safety makes it OK to do this. It is never OK to copy someone's work with out crediting them by permission. The best thing to do, is get them involved in the campaign from the start.
Guinness Hands created by Tony & Mike at AMV did this by getting Michael Schlingmann the originator of some test animations to animate the whole ad. It's the right thing to do.
Agencies need to have the integrity to contact the originator and talk to them up front. I'm sure the Professor involved would have been more than happy to help make their film even better. Imagine having the depth of knowledge he would add to the work, it begs the question why would you not get him involved.
This and many other copy cat cases have come to light so quickly because of blogging and web based news. I hope WCRS have the decency to add Prof. Daniel Simons into the credits. I think as a viral film Simon's works better as the low quality footage and scientific experiment set up works well.

Spoof US news which is so close to the real thing most people believe it. And watching Fox News that's saying something.

KidYourSelf
I have to laugh to myself when reading the diatribe of sore losers in media planning bleeting on about how 'elfyourself' didn't work. 120 million visitors over a 6 week period and 75 million elves sent on, yeah right.Advertising is a numbers game no one asks for the 30' spot to interrupt their TV program. Digital has the added advantage of people that engaged with the campaign will mostly on send on to someone that will engage with it to.
I'm sure Office Max are laughing all the way to the bank. In a sector that is low interest and driven by cost per unit having a campaign that warms consumers to their brand is a good thing. Sure some people forget the brand name, but so do most people when asked to recall any advertising campaign.
Elfyourself worked because it's a great concept, easy to engage with and you can share it. The 3 rules of user generated content on rails. I see so many online campaigns that are over complicated, digital creative's porn. Good for awards but they can only dream of being as effective as EYS.
ToyNY who have worked with OfficeMax have pushed up sales no end. Not surprising when they are all ex Fallon and Crispin Porter + Bogusky. The one other stroke of clever planning is only having these seasonal sites up for the Christmas period, that way each year it's special. The US agencies seem to get viral, they know viral is a result not a media buy.
