The wonder of the world

Thanks Alistair, CK sums it up in this video, Everything is amazing, nobody is happy.

Make me something good please

Good article by Freddie (TMTYL) here in Ad Age
I worry about the 'it's really hot right now' marketing discussion. The word marketeers need to remember is relevance. Is this message relevant to my audience. Brands would do well to spend more time building tools and services online that are useful to customers and stop making lengthy campaign creative that is irrelevant. Read more

the best driver in the world

currys next day campaign

MPUs continue to become more like TV ads (all be it with the volume turned down; not a bad thing) and I think they are working. I personally dislike banners as the format is just so over powering.

This new Currys campaign is great example simple products wrapped in boxes and delivered to your door. It even made me click on it, can't remember the last time I did that.

Model 214

The Thonet Model 214 is quite simply the best example of modern design. 6 pieces fixed together with 10 screws; hard, durable, light and elegant. I can't think of any chair that has come close to it. A slight improvement on the orginal "Chair nr. 14" known as "Konsumstuhl Nr. 14" from 1859.

I can remember my Sister's restaurant back in the 70s (themed on a 1920s American bistro) was full of them with wonderful drilled holed seats which I have always preferred to the wicker ones.

Designed in 1859 by Michael Thonet.

obama or bust

With extreme capitalism in free fall the party is surely over for the republicans. Obama continues to crush McCain in the media and the polls. Hopefully they won't be fixing the vote again like they did back in 2000.

mono

I worked with mono on a shared client back a few years now. I remember them being a breath of fresh air for that large corporate brand. Then I was enjoying their viral monoface last year and now I see the quality digital, print and ad work they are creating. A future model of what agencies look like based on the Goodby school of thought.

john peel archive

The good old beeb has (as usual) left it to the real fans out there to compile a audio memorial to John Peel.
Why don't they stop propping up just 10% of the talentless musak DJs they employee and put some of our hard earned into a full and proper audio archive of the great man.

John Peel Day is on 13th October this year.

johnpeel every day site is very good and has lots of links to archive material to download and listen to.

The Guardian, Thursday June 19 2008

LinkedIn, the social networking website that helps business contacts and former colleagues keep in touch, has joined the exclusive club of dotcom companies to secure a billion dollar valuation after a fresh round of venture capital funding.

Primark leaves child labour suppliers

Source The Guardian
Julia Finch, City editor
guardian.co.uk, Monday June 16 2008

Fashion chain Primark has axed three longstanding suppliers in southern India for using child labour after being alerted to the practice by the BBC.

The three suppliers - from the Tirapur region of the Tamil Nadu province - were sub-contracting embroidery work on dresses to child home workers.

The retailer, which is owned by the Associated British Food group and operates 170 stores in the UK, has grown to become the UK's second biggest clothing chain by offering cut-price fashion, with T-shirts for as little as £1. Almost its entire range is sourced from low-cost suppliers in Asia.

go go crazy bones

I take my son to school today and 2 of his friends wave yellow bags at him. I think, what's that all about. Then I remember him saying he wants go gos and the two things connect, go gos in the bags; a short google search later and i'm in the go go zone. 6 news agents later we find the last 3 in stock in town. 100s of pieces of plastic endless combinations of gaming and not a LCD screen in sight.
